Ecosystem approach to solution of the problem of soil erosion in Ukraine

ANNOTATION

In the current condition of society development, soil erosion is a serious global problem, which on one hand, reduces efficiency of production and labour productivity in agriculture, and on the other hand, prevents sustainable development, because of a negative impact on climate changes, threat to food safety, as well as it contributes to poverty of people in rural area. That problem is also urgent in Ukraine because a great area of agricultural lands suffers from erosion processes. To cease the negative effect of soil erosion in Ukraine, the researchers support the idea to achieve a neutral level of land degradation by fulfilling the task of protection of the natural capital of land resources and ecosystem services, related with land. In the article, the author argues some scientific ideas concerning solution of the problem of soil erosion, which are based on the ecosystem approach. That approach secures correlating human needs with biological capabilities of ecosystems and those needs satisfaction. Considering the growing demand for services, provided by land resources, it is necessary to introduce effective measures for protection and reclamation of the natural capital of lands for them to be able to supply the essential ecosystem services both today and in the future. That approach will also balance the inevitable losses of soil due to agricultural practice and other anthropogenic effects. A particular attention is paid to agroforestry as a dynamic and ecologically argued method of sustainable management of natural resources. Agroforestry includes both traditional and modern systems of land use, which contribute to diversification and support of production for improvement of social, economic, and ecological benefits for land-users. The research describes potential benefits from the ecosystem services of the forest and shrub lands in agroforestry. The author of the work supplies recommendations concerning the methods of assessment of the economic value of those services. That value should be calculated while arguing the measures for sustainable management of land resources and in the planning practice to choose an optimal system of land use, which can secure a zero level of soil erosion.
