ANNOTATION

The article presents findings of the analysis on importance of household farms for food security of Ukraine. It is determined that nowadays household farms are a significant and necessary element in the system of formation of the country’s food security. Considering available resources, those farms have long successfully performed the function of main suppliers of the principal kinds of agro-industrial products. They are of essential importance in supply of Ukraine’s population with potato, vegetables, fruit and berries, milk, eggs.

It is shown that contribution of household farms to formation of food security of the country is revealed both in supply of the own-produced food products by rural households and in the sale of a share of produced agricultural products. It is noted that commodity production can be increased by households with large land ownership, which are capable and willing to activate their business activities. The work gives assessment of the number and resource potential of such households. It is determined that the number of officially registered physical entities in Ukraine, i.e. entrepreneurs, who run their activities in agriculture (16 thousand in the early 2022), is several times smaller than the number of rural households, which cultivate more than 10 ha of lands. Above 40% of lands, cultivated by the household farms, are used by business entities, which have above 5 ha of lands. The fact confirms insufficient employment of the resource potential of household farms for satisfaction of the country’s demand for food.

It is suggested that some changes may happen in the activities of household farms because of aggravation of the social and economic crisis under effect of the martial law. It is concluded that household farms will try to compete by expanding their land area under potato and vegetables. However, a significant growth in the production of milk and meat will hardly happen. The complicated supply of materials prevents intensification of agricultural production and negatively influences yields of agricultural crops and animals.
